Consisting of correspondence and other papers relating to Sloan's Confederate military service in Co. B, Holcombe Legion, Co. G, 5th Regiment, South Carolina State Troops, and 1st Battalion, South Carolina Reserves. Includes military commissions, 19 Apr. 1851, appointing Sloan judge advocate, 37th Regiment, S.C. Militia, and 21 Nov. 1861, appointing him captain, Holcombe Legion. Subjects include the hiring of substitutes; the death of Pvt. Seth M. Sloan, Sept. 1862; J.F. Sloan's resignation from Confederate service due to medical disability; and his subsequent work arresting deserters and absentees. Also contains legal records, 1848-1856, re bankruptcy proceedings of Bivingsville Cotton Manufacturing Co.; business and land papers documenting Sloan's activities as magistrate and surveyor; text of sermon, 21 July 1901, by the Rev. Albert Allison James re the history of Fair Forest Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg County, S.C.; letter, 14 Apr. 1902, from Byrdie Tauneley Wills, Charlottesville, Va., describing her visit to the gravesite of Seth M. Sloan; memorial tribute, 19 June 1903, to J.F. Sloan by Pacolet Lodge No. 150, Ancient Free Masons; and will of Sloan's son-in-law, William James Wells, 25 June 1934. Bound volumes include 30 volumes, 1854-1902, diary of James F. Sloan with daily entries re weather, agriculture, elections, militia duty, and Civil War experiences; 12 volumes, 1857-1888, field notebooks re Sloan's surveying projects; account book, 1861-1862, with records of Co. B, Holcombe Legion; morning report book, 1863-1865, with daily entries, c. 17 Sept. 1863 - 6 Feb. 1864, for Co. G, 5th Regiment, South Carolina State Troops, and 24 Jan. - 26 Apr. 1865, for 1st Battalion, South Carolina Reserves. Scrapbook, 1898-1902, of collected newspaper articles written by J.F. Sloan.
