Consisting of correspondence and other papers relating to Sloan's Confederate military service in Co. B, Holcombe Legion, Co. G, 5th Regiment, South Carolina State Troops, and 1st Battalion, South Carolina Reserves. Includes military commissions, 19 Apr. 1851, appointing Sloan judge advocate, 37th Regiment, S.C. Militia, and 21 Nov. 1861, appointing him captain, Holcombe Legion. Subjects include the hiring of substitutes; the death of Pvt. Seth M. Sloan, Sept. 1862; J.F. Sloan's resignation from Confederate service due to medical disability; and his subsequent work arresting deserters and absentees. Also contains legal records, 1848-1856, re bankruptcy proceedings of Bivingsville Cotton Manufacturing Co.; business and land papers documenting Sloan's activities as magistrate and surveyor; text of sermon, 21 July 1901, by the Rev.
